In 1984 East Beirut, young Zeina and her brother wait at home during the Lebanese civil war while their parents are stuck on the other side of the city after a bombing. Neighbours gather in the apartment foyer, the safest room, and pass the time cooking, playing games and gossiping. Flashbacks show life in Lebanon before the war. (Source: www.kirkusreviews.com)
Zeina Abirached's autobiographical graphic memoir is drawn in stark black and white. The apartment sits on the line dividing Christian East Beirut from Muslim West Beirut. Published in English by Graphic Universe; a revised, expanded edition with a new illustrated afterword came out in 2022. (Source: www.kirkusreviews.com)
